What is kokedama?

It's a living plant whose roots are wrapped in soil and then covered in moss.
The kokedama grew out of Japanese bonsai culture in a more humble, informal style. While the Bonsai dates back to more than 1000 years ago and is refined and structural, the kokedama likely developed in the 17th century when ordinary people in Japan began enjoying plant cultivation at home. Instead of carefully shaped trees in ceramic pots, the kokedama embraced natural imperfection. It reflects core Japanese aesthetic ideals, such as Wabi-sabi ( the beauty of imperfection and impermancence).
It sits at the crossroads of art, gardening and meditation.
Our Story
Kikodama was established in Portland, Oregon, amidst the pandemic, where Keiko shares the art of kokedama, a traditional Japanese botanical technique that is accessible to all ages and skill levels. Additionally, Keiko aims to introduce the Japanese aesthetic, inspiring people reconnect with nature and cultivate a deeper appreciation for the natural world and self-reflection.

Welcome to Kikodama LLC, a unique venture founded by Keiko from Osaka, Japan, during the pandemic in Portland, Oregon! Keiko is excited to introduce a Japanese botanical technique that anyone, young or old, can easily learn. Our minimalist design allows you to hang indoor plants from the ceiling without the need for heavy ceramic pots or excess soil. Transform your home into a green oasis with Kikodama’s innovative approach!

What's Wabi Sabi?
Wabi-sabi is the traditional Japanese aesthetic of finding beauty in imperfection, impermanence, and natural simplicity.
Your moss ball will never be a perfect geometric sphere. The plant will naturally lean, stretch, and grow toward the light in its own unique, lopsided way. That irregularity is where it's charm lives.
